This is the second in a 12-pack of simple, short and useful tips to help you write more better today.

Tool Two: Use Better Verbs

You weren’t hired to be a creative writer. Get over it.

Creative writers tend to flower their copy with dazzling, beautiful adjectives to help paint the pretty picture.

Don’t. Get over it.

Your craft celebrates the economy of language. Never use two words when one works.

Verbs help. Poor writers use more adjectives. Great writers use better verbs.

Great verbs engage the listener and viewer, and you want them engaged, don’t you?

As my partner, Roy H. Williams, teaches:

  • Bad ads position the consumer as an uninvolved bystander.
  • Good ads position the consumer as an interested observer.
  • Great ads position the consumer as an active participant.

Understand?

Do a Google® search on “Great Verbs.’ Use them in your copy. Prepare to write gooder ads.

One particular site I enjoy: www.oceansiderevolution.com/verbage/ was created by a teacher who really, really likes verbs.

Soon, you will, too.

Tool One:  Listen.
